When Apple launched their long awaited iPad, they stole a march on the rest of the tablet market

. Blackberry have now unveiled their Playbook, a high specification device that looks to go head to head with its rival as the ultimate device of its kind.

A glance at the specifications for the Playbook and it is immediately evident that this is a top end device. The unit features a 1Ghz dual core processor, perfect for fast web browsing and handling the multi tasking facilites that the device offers. RAM memory on the device is also impressive at 1GB. In terms of the operating system, RIM have decided against simply adjusting a version found on their current range of mobile devices. The 6.0 OS has been developed especially for large screen devices such as this. One down side to this is that existing Blackberry applications will not work, however this range has always been somewhat limited and will not discourage many potential customers. In addition to this, the Playbook supports Java, so any applications using this coding can be implemented straight away. A host of connectivity options are available so you can always be sure of internet coverage. WiFi is supported with all three current speeds catered for. The web browser itself benefits from both Flash and HTML support, giving a more complete online experience than can be found on the iPad. Two cameras are incorporated in the unit. The front facing camera can capture images at a resolution of 3 million pixels, and the rear camera raises the bar a little further by offering 5 million. Video capture facilities are superb, with 1080P high definition filming, and thanks to the unit offering a HDMI socket, the results can be played directly on a HD television or projector.

The Blackberry Playbook benefits from taking a middle ground in terms of size. With a 7 inch screen, this model can be labelled both large enough to be effective without being large enough to require both hands to use. The screen itself shows a very high resolution image of 1024 x 600, and this is evident in the crystal clear picture that is produced. Thanks to its capacitive nature, the screen is responsive, and multi touch is also incorporated. With all of the impressive features considered, no announcement has yet been made with regards to battery life, and the risk is that they could prove to much of a drain, thus this is an area RIM need to consider carefully, as an impressive battery really would top off this excellent package superbly.

The Blackberry Playbook looks to be a sure fire hit with consumers, and some considered introductions on this model look set to make this tablet perhaps the very best available.
