An Uproarious Day with Steve Martin on Satellite TV

An Uproarious Day with Steve Martin on Satellite TV

If it seems like Steve Martin is a natural when it comes to comedy, that's because he's been doing it for most of his life. Anyone who has picked up his memoirs can see that magic and telling jokes were in his repertoire in his teens. Martin's intelligence continually comes across in his performances as well. He's not just funny, but also slimy and creepy, or goofy and idiotic, as the situation demands. Here are five Steve Martin gems to peek in on when you want to put your HD satellite TV package to good use.

1. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. You cannot get into a Martin viewing party without getting a look at the sleazy side of Steve, something perfectly on display in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The plot involves a contest between a couple of con artists in Cannes trying to pull off the biggest con. The signature image of the film remains the shot of Martin walking by the docks with Michael Caine. As he passes a bystander, Martin casually elbows him off the dock into the water. This film can only be described as hysterical.

2. L.A. Story. Martin's love letter to Los Angeles is the sort of project which always seemed to be in his head. In fact, the script was the result of a lot of thinking and revising for about 5 years. The result is a mix of slapstick, satire of modern culture, Shakespeare references and Fellini nods. It's one of the least appreciated gems of the 1990's. Check your satellite TV local listing for a showing of this hilarious picture.

3. Three Amigos. Get sombreros on the heads of Martin, Chevy Chase and Martin Short and send them off to Mexico in mariachi suits. Does there really need to be a plot? There doesn't, but you can get into the story of them being silent film stars if you like. The small village tries to stay in awe of the amigos, though it gets difficult as time passes. Check out this laugh riot in high definition on any of the comedy networks.

4. Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The film Due Date is being billed as a loose remake of this Martin and John Candy classic. Candy gets to stretch out his formidable comic talents with Martin playing the straight man. Check it out when you see it pop up on a satellite TV network like HBO.

5. His Saturday Night Live performances. Between Alec Baldwin and Martin, there is a constant race for the most times hosted' award. Martin may have seemed like he was a cast member in the seventies, but in actuality he was just hosting an awful lot. A quick glance at some of his greatest hits will reveal the uproarious sketches like Wild and Craaazy Guys' alongside Dan Akroyd. It doesn't get any better than this on live television. For a classic recent skit, see the digital short Close Talkers' with Will Forte.
