A ballet introduction

All of you know ballet for sure. It is the very glamourous dancing which great stars practice. Not just for the dance itself, but you can look at it as a full-body training. You have probably already seen it on television or in the movies.

When did it start?

It all started in 1661, this is when the first ever ballet school opened it's doors in France. Surprisingly, as opposed to modern standards, ballet was only practiced and danced by men. They didn't look like ballet dancers at all since they wore ankle-length dresses. It was only until 20 years later, that women got allowed to dance ballet.

Surprisingly, modern ballet still uses the same techniques as they used then. It was/is all about the perfect arm and leg positions as well as continuing to look graceful while doing so. Most of the ballet combinations still begin with "devant", "glissade", "barre", etc. To do these positions, the dancers have to "turn out" their legs and feet, this is a rotation of the leg so the knee and foot run outwards. This allows the dancers to further extend their leg, especially when raising it to the side or rear.

A great way for the dancers to practice is by trains using a "barre", this is a wooden plint, positioned horizontally about 3 to 45 inches above the ground. They can use it in a variation of ways. They can put their leg onto the bar and stretch their legs by hooking their heel over it. I wouldn't advise on doing this unless you are an experienced ballet practitioner.

The ballet experience

The first time you'll go to a ballet, you will notice the beautiful music, lightning and sound effects, lovely costumes and not to forget the great storyline. The thing is, ballet used to be just about dancing, now modern ballet is more of a "ballet-program" rather then only the dance. It is an act, sometimes based on a true story, performed by a team of professional ballet dancers. The greatest example of all time is "SWAN LAKE", which became so famous that it was performed all over the world. And every time it was performed in a different state, the play was entirely different because of the "choreographed".

The choreographer

A choreographer is a person who plans each part of the ballet. They decide every single move the ballet dancers perform. Every move has been trained and optimized for months. This is the main reason why every ballet play is different. It may be the same plot, but still there is no way for comparison.

The conclusion

As you can see being a ballet dancer isn't just for show, it is a hard working job which requires huge amounts of motivation and a lot of practice.
