An overview of Classical Guitar

Classical guitars are called as "Spanish guitar" or the "nylon string guitar." The traditional classical guitar is an acoustic (nonelectric) instrument with six strings. These strings are plucked by the fingers. The six strings has three six high strings (treble strings) made of nylon, and three low strings (bass strings) made of metal thread wrapped around a flossy nylon filament core. Most non-guitar players are categorize the Guitars into two broad categories, such as acoustic and electric. They unknowingly hunk the classical guitar with folk guitar. But there are many distinctions between the classical and folk guitars and they are discussed here,

One easily detectable difference between the classical and folk guitars is the composition of the strings. Folk guitars are traditionally strung with metal strings and played by a pick or plectrum. Classical are strung with nylon strings and are picked with the thumb and first three fingers of the right hand. The higher register strings are made by the mono-filament nylon. The three bass strings are made up of very fine metal wire wrapped around a multi-filament nylon core. Generally the nylon strings are having much lower tension than the folk guitar's steel strings. And they are easy to play and also have a less-harsh, mellower sound than metal strings compared with folk guitars.

The neck and fingerboard on a classical guitar are wider and less tapered than a folk or electric guitar. The headstock of the classical guitar is quite different from the folk guitar headstock. To begin with, tuning pegs on a classical guitar is perpendicular to the face of the headstock and point backwards toward the player. While, on a folk guitar, the tuning pegs are mounted parallel to the face of the headstock and three machine heads point upward while the other three point toward the floor. The scale length can be measured by, finding the distance from the nut to the 12th fret and doubling this measurement, it is the nominal vibrating length of the strings. The classical guitar has a scale length of about 25.6-inches.

Classical and folk guitars are also varied by "how they are played". The folk guitars can be either worn with a strap or supported by the right leg when in a sitting position. The classic guitar is rested on the left leg. In this position, the neck can be more easily angled upward which presents a more natural and relaxed angle for the left hand. As I mentioned earlier, a classical guitars are played with the fingers rather than with a pick.

Although the classical Guitar is associated with classical music, it is often used to play popular or folk music. Classical guitars are often purchased by the non-classical musicians those who like the feel and sound of the nylon strings. In these cases, the classical guitar is played just like a folk guitar and played with a pick. But In fact, the nylon strings are considered as a right choice for the beginning guitarist.
