A diminished formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow, either due to defects in the bone marrow, or due to an inadequate intake of iron, vitamins, and proteins, is one of the main causes of anaemia.
Other important causes are heavy loss of blood due to injury, bleeding piles, or excessive menstruation in women.
Anaemia can also occur due to a lack of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which is needed for digestion of iron and proteins, or intestinal parasites or worms. Hookworms, pinworms, round worms and tape worms feed on the supply of blood as well as on the vitamins.
Symptoms of Anaemia
Following are the major anemia symptoms:
1.Pale appearance of skin due to the loss of blood
2.Discoloration of the nails and the lips
3.Patient usually feels fatigue and unable to work for long hours
4.Insomnia is also commonly observed with anemic patients
5.Digestive problems like indigestion, constipation and flatulence may sometimes also be seen
6.Person suffering from anemia also finds difficult to breathe
7.The person feels cold often. The hands and feet are felt as cold
8.Heartbeats will be quite rapid. Minor activities can raise the heartbeat excessively
How to prevent anemia in infants:
Anemia is caused due to lack of iron in body. The proper intake of iron-rich food, vegetables, etc., by mothers, make their milk the best source of iron for infants, So, mother should feed their infant child at least for one to two years. Infant also should not be given cow milk, as it does not contain appropriate amount of iron in it. Children above 6 months can also be fed with iron and Vitamin C-rich food, however, they should still be fed with mothers milk.
Treatment of Anemia
Anemia can be easily identified by the doctor taking a blood sample and checking a complete blood count. According to the Mayo Clinic, the size, shape and color of the red blood cells can tell the doctor if the patient has iron deficiency anemia or vitamin deficiency anemia. Once anemia is determined, the doctor may do more tests to check if there is an underlying cause of the anemia. Treatment will then be given depending upon the type of anemia the patient has. In many instances, taking an iron supplement or a multi-vitamin is all that is necessary to treat anemia. If other issues are causing the anemia, the doctor will treat those health concerns.
Anemia is the most common blood condition in the U.S. and nearly 3.5 million Americans are affected by it. Knowing the symptoms of anemia is the first step to getting treatment. It is important to see a doctor about anemia symptoms because, although it is not dangerous in many instances, in some cases anemia can be life-threatening. In the majority of cases, anemia can be treated so it no longer affects the patients everyday life.
