Anatomy Of Skin And Its Care

The human skin is made up of different types of cells and structures that constantly change layers

, these layers are regularly shed and replaced by newer skin layers. The skin thickness varies between people and every person is blessed with a distinct layer of skin thickness; as such maintaining a healthy and good skin is very important. The human skin is part of several functions inside the body; and maintaining its sensory perception is important to keep the protective layer and its sensory perceptions intact.

Skin Anatomy

There are 3 types of skin layers namely

1.The topmost layer of Epidermis (stratum corneum) also called outer layer of skin, houses skin cells that are shed every 2 weeks.

2.The Dermis contains 3 types of tissues namely collagen, elastic tissue and reticular fibers.

3.The Subcutaneous Tissue is a layer of fat and connective tissues.

Types of Skin

Normal skin, combination skin, oily skin, and dry skin are 4 types of skin in human body and each requires a different approach to maintain them.

1. Normal skin has the proper balance of oil and moisture, thus making it non greasy or dry. As such Normal skin is clear, supple and healthy and needs skin care but less than other skin types.

2. Dry skin cant retain moisture as good as normal skin does, and so is prone to wrinkles and lines. So people with dry skin need to use a good moisturizer.

3. Oily skin is the result of over secretion of sebum. The excess oil on the skin often results in spots and pimples and thus needs regular and thorough cleansing.

4. Combination skin is both oily and dry. Generally in such cases forehead, nose and chin are oily, and cheeks and other areas are dry. As such extra care is needed to maintain such skin type.

It may be said that skin irrespective of nationality, caste or creed is an important and integral part of human body. It is important for people to take good care of skin during extreme weather conditions. Skincare differs during winter and summer, as well as during milder months. How to take better care of the skin is given below:

Normal Skin: Normal skin has proper balance of oil and moisture, as such its not greasy or dry. But people with normal skin still need to take good care of their skin by using sun creams and lotions that are not too harsh on the skin. However people with normal skin need to be careful that they dont lose skin moisture.

Dry Skin: Dry skin lacks oil and moisture, and so is more sensitive to with regards to what type of skin care products are used on them. Dry skin affects people even if they are young or old but elderly people mostly complain of dry skin due to cold weather.

Also dehydration, using harmful detergents, drugs, ointments, perfumes; or prolonged kidney and liver problems results in the skin going dry. If the skin texture is thin and feels dry on touch, the skin goes dry. Also if the skin has flaky patches or feels tight it is considered as dry. As such dry skin needs good moisturizer. After cleansing, its better to apply a good moisturizer on the skin before going to bed to maintain the freshness of skin. A cucumber paste is always beneficial. However dry skin should not be cleaned with cold water.

Oily Skin: Oily skin with over active subaceous gland leaves a person with shiny face, particularly in the nose, forehead and chin. The oily skin is prone to pimples, blackheads, and other acne problems. People with oily skin need to take special care to keep their skin pores open, and prevent dirt accumulation that creates more problem. Frequent cleansing (3 times/day) using a medicated soap or cleansing milk is key to control oily skin.

Combination Skin: Combination skin with some dry and some oily areas needs more attention than normal skin. In such cases the forehead, nose, cheeks are always oily, but rest of the face such as cheeks and necks are dry and need moisturizing twice a day. Cleansing the oily area twice a day with cleansing cream devoid of oil also helps. Better still is to use 2 types of packs that suit the dual skin type.
