Controlling your Anger
Expressing yourself may be hard at times, and anger management is all about a controlled way of expressing yourself. Emotions can take control and Anger is one we need to be aware of. It can be hurtful or even destructive and can inhibit or prevent us from making relationships. Knowing this it can have an impact on our lives.
The emotion anger can be a tricky one as sometimes comes from a reaction of some sort. Normally when something is out of control we react and we may find our emotion creeping up considerably. Smaller issues can sometimes add to the emotion bit by bit until we find ourselves in a totally uncontrollable state. Or sometimes one large value or issues comes to mind and the impact of it can make us react inappropriate.
Have you ever reacted badly to a situation? Some people will react differently depending on the ability to control their anger. Those who have learnt some techniques such as self talk, meditation, and looking at the issues strategically may find easier solutions than others that are blinded by anger. Anger inhibits our solutions and free thinking. If we find that we are getting angrier and our solutions are not coming to mind we may need to look at changing our anger managerial techniques.
If we find something is bothering us we should acknowledge it and move on. Sometimes our past will affect the way we do things for the future. We should look into the underlying reason why we do things. This may help to find out why we react in a certain way.
Your self talk (internal talk) may be making things worse. Be aware of your conversation internally as this may be adding wood to the fire. If you take control of your thinking then your actions will be ones that have been controlled. First comes thinking, then comes action then comes the result of your actions.
A lot of people like mediation and breathing exercises also to help calm down. If you find you need to count to ten and breathe between each then this may be a tip for you. It can help you relax and stay calm also. With time on your hands you won't act to quick and be able to think clearer.
A part of being in control is acting wisely. This involves thinking about what you would like to say before saying it as you may find that a quick response is not always the best result. Don't let the other person get you to react the way they want you to. Be in control and don't be afraid of confrontations.
Don't let anger control your career either. Your workplace is one where you need to react in a dignified and professional manner. Managers know the importance of keeping the look and not losing the plot when there are stressful situations about. No one likes a leader that's out of control.
If you find your workload or stress at work adding to your anger you should do something about it before it gets out of control. Discussing issues with Managers and staff may help with delegation and task sharing. Don't take on an unrealistic workload and organise your desk and time correctly. These small things can take away a large part of the emotion.
There are many anger management programs to help people deal with their anger. Some courses involve counselling sessions and cognitive therapy on a one-to-one basis or in groups. These courses will help you to deal with your feelings of anger in calm and rational ways using some tried and tested techniques. Some people will benefit from assertiveness training, especially if anger management issues result from a failure to express angry feelings in a constructive manner.
Your doctor could also help identify if there is more than meets the eye. Sometimes your stress and anger levels could be from an underlying medical condition or illness. If you find these techniques are still not working. Please see your doctor for more support. He/She may even know some great programs out there.
