Apartments - The Answers You Need Before Moving In

There are a lot of unhappy people living in apartments today

. Why is that? It's because most people put very little thought and energy into determining where they want to live. They pick a place because it's close to work or because they have a friend who said it was a nice place to live. So it might be, but choosing a place to live is a very individual matter and is no less important of a decision just because you may only stay there a short time. Here are some of the answers you should get before moving in. Get the right answers, and you'll be a happy tenant.

- What is included?

A really bad mistake a lot of young tenants make when looking for apartments is failing to consider everything that goes into their budget. You factored in the rent, your cell phone bill, your insurance, and so forth. You think everything is set. A month rolls by and suddenly you have a bill for the cable, a bill for the electricity, an unexpected parking bill, etc. You've gone over budget and you have to turn to your "emergency" credit cards to pay everything on time. This is an all too common scenario but it is easily avoided. Make sure you know exactly what is and isn't included in the rent when you sign a lease.

- What are the rules?

Unless you like to adopt a "do it and ask for forgiveness later" approach to life, you're going to want to familiarize yourself with the rules of your new abode. There will be many, though they probably won't be unnecessarily restrictive. Some may be "unwritten", so make sure you check with your landlord if you have a specific question. Grilling on the back porch, for instance, may be one of those things that aren't specifically forbidden in the lease, but against the rules nonetheless. If there are policies regarding pets, noise, and redecoration, make sure you know them.

- What about roommates?

If you think you may want roommates later on in the lease, find out what the policy is regarding their stay. Most apartments like everyone to be on the lease. This works as protection for you as well, since they will be just as responsible for the rent as you are. Sometimes, of course, it's just easier to leave the management out of it. If you live in a large complex, the office will probably never realize you have someone living there who isn't on the lease unless a problem arises. If you live in a smaller place, though, you'll need to clear it.
