My experiences working in the field of counseling, patient advocacy and mental health although limited up to this point have convinced me to apply for the master's degree in counseling program with an emphasis in Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling).

Many people can be dramatically helped through counseling, but far too people currently have access to trained counselors for a number of reasons, including their inability to pay for counseling, personal reticence about the counseling process, and linguistic and cultural barriers. I believe that I could help to break down many of these barriers and work with both families and individuals to help give them the tools that they need to move forward in their lives.

I have worked part-time as a Substitute Adult Role Model at JB Counseling and Consulting, a job that led to my volunteering to work at Hillsides, a home and rehabilitation center for at risk children, where my application is still being processed.

At JB Counseling I learned firsthand the real difference that can happen in the life of at-risk youth when an adult simply takes the time to listen. While serving as a counselor there I had the following responsibilities:

I worked with at risk youth who have no positive outlets available to them.

I acted as an adult role model for kids with no one home in the household or just have no father or brother.

I spent quality time with kids who come from neglectful or abusive families.
