Application Of Waterproofing In Water Supply Systems
In my previous article about civil engineering works and maintenance
, I discussed how the profession has historical significance and how it continues to play a crucial role in the lives of the human race. We also saw that civil works such as the construction of roads, railways, dams etc. involves the engagement of both private contractors and the government in order to carryout projects of such magnitude. It requires huge investments usually from the pockets of ordinary citizens to complete such projects.
We also learnt that the private contractor and the government normally get into an agreement concerning the maintenance of the structure after construction. In some cases however, the expertise of engineers do not cover certain aspects such as waterproofing and as a result may require the services of another company, a subcontractor, with the necessary expertise in that field.
One of the most important areas in which waterproofing applications are used is large underground pipes, which serve as conduits for water supply. These pipes are a means in which water is supplied to various sectors of the economy. Because of their exposure to water on a constant basis, they are may eventually develop cracks and cause leakages. The nature of this kind of problem is one of a health matter. If leakages are not dealt with effectively, there is the likelihood of the pipes developing mildews and fungus related organisms. The result of this is that, water supply to the communities gets contaminated and very soon we will be sitting on health time bomb.
The complexity of this kind of water related health problem is enormous and as a result will require the services of professionals, who have gathered enough knowledge and experience overtime. The waterproofing professionals will be able to do a proper assessment of the condition and come up with the most appropriate solution to the problem.
If one wants to prevent the occurrence of leakages in the pipes, it is very important to monitor them on regular basis and do upgrades on the water sealants. Doing so has the benefit of reducing the impact on cost if left unattended to for a long period of time.
There are a number of waterproofing materials developed over the years that can be used for sealing leakages. An example, which is used for the purpose discussed above, is liquid plastic injection. Apart from its effectiveness in pipes, it can also be used in
tunnels waterproofing projects.
