The standard visa to the country is for six months with an option to become an entrepreneur through an investment of at least US$100,000.

Getting a visa to Colombia though is not without its challenges. The following are some tips in obtaining a visa to Colombia:

1. Depending on the visa application, one document that is needed to be submitted is a certificate of funds duly signed by a certified public accountant. These funds would indicate the amount of funds deposited or invested in Colombia;

2. Applying for a visa can be done through a Colombia embassy or consulate outside of Colombia. All of the documents issued by the consulate or embassy must be brought to the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores for proper verification. This verification is needed in order to be allowed entry into the country;

3. Be prepared for the exchange rate not only for your country's money and for Colombia's denomination, but neighboring countries too such as Venezuela and Bolivia. This would allow you the necessary flexibility in purchases within the region;

4. Be prepared for overcharging, be it in taxis but also in other services in the country. Traffic also is quite haphazard, so be prepared for either traffic jams or overspeeding drivers especially from the airport to the city;

5. Have personal identification at all times. This is to avoid any complications when in public as to your status. The following are some identification cards that can help, such as student card, international driver's license, vaccination certificates, travel or medical insurance cards. It would also be prudent to have your passport, credit cards, insurances and other pertinent documentation photocopied so that you would have a copy if ever the document is lost.

As can be seen, getting a visa to Colombia is pretty cut and dried. All you need is to submit an application together with the pertinent documentation required. What should be avoided are the other factors, such as visa assistance entities, exchange rate, possible risks and problems along the way. Because of the ease in obtaining a visa to Colombia, getting there would be a breeze.
