Approaching PR brainstorming
As an industry that's essentially based on the generation of good ideas, brainstorming is an important part of how any PR agency operates.
If you take a careful approach to how you bring your brainstorming sessions together, you can ensure they're as productive as possible, yield positive results and build team spirit. Below are five tips on best practise when it comes to leading your own brainstorm. 1. Streamline your team
While getting input from a diverse range of people increases your chances of coming up with some fantastic ideas, bringing together a room that's too full could result in ideas going unheard. Think carefully about the right people to bring in to keep numbers down and create an optimum environment as a guideline, it's advisable not to have more than eight people contributing in any one meeting. 2. Ask brainstormers to come prepared
Send a brief email to those you've invited to the brainstorm, outlining what you'll be discussing and what you're after from them, and circulate any relevant documents that will help them prepare; this way, you won't have to waste valuable time laying out the ground work before you get down to generating ideas. 3. Turn down the pressure
In brainstorming situations, staff are bound to feel under a certain degree of pressure to contribute. However, make sure you don't pile it on too thick - it'll only result in your meeting falling into guarded and, therefore, non-creative territory. It will always be the case that some have more to say than others, but you're more likely to bring the best out in people if they feel free to speak their mind. 4. Treat every idea with respect
Sometimes fantastic PR campaigns spring for what can seem, at first, to be a silly idea. Even if you think they're moving in the wrong direction, hear your team members out and try and draw something positive from what they've said, however small. 5. Know when to call it a day
Don't prolong your brainstorm if the ideas are beginning to run dry. If the room goes quiet for an extended period and it becomes apparent that things are running out of steam but you've still not get everything you need, suggest that you all come together again at another time, then try and approach your topic from a fresh angle next time.
