Aquaponics-How to set up an Aquaponics system

An aquaponics system isn't that hard to set up, if you can look after a few fish and cut a length of pipe then you are ok. It really is that simple because once it is in place it becomes a self functioning natural cycle.

Here is a quick guide to setting up your system.

1. Aquaponics-How to get your fish tank ready.

Of the whole process this is the longest bit because it can take up to four weeks to get the water ready for your fish, unless you use gold fish in which case the tank is habitable in a few days. Being as my set up is an indoor aquaponics one I wanted bright tropical fish so I had yo wait a month for the tank to be ready.

All you need to do is fill the tank with water and whatever decorations the tank is having and then flick on the filter. I always put a few flakes of food in as well to help the vital natural bacteria to form. After four weeks you can add your fish but in the meantime get your set up finished.

2. Aquaponics-How to set up your plant beds.

The plant pots are best put on shelves, which means you get more crops per square foot than a normal garden. Over the pots you will have a pipe with holes strategically drilled so that water drips onto the plants to feed them. This water which is the filtered water from your fish tank then drips through the pots and back into the return pipe.

This filters the water again and gives your plants all the food they need before returning the clean water back to the tank to start over again.

The best filter to use is an out of tank one because it makes things much simpler. Instead of using the return pipe on the filter to send water back to the fish tank you just send it to your plant feeding pipes instead. The return pipe then uses gravity to send the water back, so make sure that your plants are higher up than the fish tank so that gravity can do it's stuff.
