I'm always amazed by the stupidity of homeowners when they give their house keys to the painter & decorator that they just met for five minutes when he called around to do an estimate.

What Are Homeowners Lazy & Irresponsible About Home Security?

You might think I'm been a little unfair here but to be honest I'm tired of writing dreary articles warning homeowners about how to deal with tradesmen. They continue to give out their house keys, burglar alarm details and wads of cash to unscrupulous tradesmen without bothering to do there home work.

As kids we grow up hearing our parents telling us "Don't accept sweets from strangers." which is a bit rich because when you grow up you realize that your loving parents repeatedly gave the house keys to strangers.

Can you believe it, we're talking about responsible parents here who probably hold down reasonably responsible jobs and yet they give strangers the run of the house when they go off to work.

Passports, driving licenses, creditcards, car keys & personal correspondence are generally left lying around for interested parties so why should we be in the least bit concerned when the painter & decorator decides to a runner with their savings and few of the processions?

I worked with a London company for over 30 Years in some of the most prestigious homes. My crew found guns, drugs, and explicit porn on a regular basis which was a clear indication of just how irresponsible some homeowners are.

When Are Homeowners Going To Grow Up?

It about time homeowners took some responsibility for their actions. I mean, if you left your laptop on the bar with your house keys and a bit of cash for good measure and went out side for a fag what you are actually doing here is inciting a crime. The same might be true if you left loads of goodies out for your painter & decorator. It's not like you ran a police check to see if he had a criminal record or carried out a credit check to if his house was currently been processed.

So why not play fair, instead of trying to incite your painter and decorator to steal some of your belongings why not make a little effort and put some of the goodies away. Statistically it quite clear that you wont bother to check references, carry out identity checks or any other form of research so if you wish to avoid featuring on one those morning tv shows at least put some of the goodies away.

Conclusion

UK homeowners have to be the most stupid people I have ever met. The invite strangers into their home, tell them where the cash is and then head off to work without a care in the world.
