Are Led Televisions Worth The Hype?

LED televisions have been built up, as newer technology tends to be

. An easy rule to follow is not to buy brand new, or 'state of the art' technology. All technology needs time to work out its bugs, and to saturate the market a little so the price goes down. LED televisions are no different. They have been on the market for a few years now; and every year they get cheaper.

In many cases they are built up to be the best new technology has to offer in consumer television. That claim is not without its grounds, but is it really worth the increased price to own an LED television? Typically the answer is no. The elevated cost rarely pays off in the long run. LED televisions are among the thinnest, lightest, and most energy efficient televisions.

An LED television is different from other forms of televisions because-- instead of using the same back lighting, which on other models it typically florescent lighting; LED televisions use a LED (light emitting diode) back light. It is much like a panel of very small light bulbs that allow for more independent control of light. It's important to note that the LED back light only produces clear light, and no picture.

The picture is formed by the LCD screen laid over the LED back light. This means that typical LCD televisions are capable of producing the same color quality and definition as an LED television. All the LED does is produce the light, all other image, color, and definition processing occur in other parts of the television, all of which can be found on an LCD or plasma television.

So what does an LED television offer to justify the increased price, other than thinness, weight, and energy efficiency? The constancy of LED lighting provides more reliable color saturation. This means, partly, that it works better in different lighting. The color saturation allows the LED to ignore some glare, and provide vivid pictures in the dark. Some LED models also provide what is called edge lighting.

Edge lighting shines light onto the screen from the edge-- to further strengthen the picture and color. LED also typically provides for greater contrast ratios as the LED back light can, in most cases, manipulate light faster and more effectively then LCD back lights. While LED television is most certainly an advance in technology, and part of the future of television, it may be better to buy an identical LCD television for significantly less.
