Are Natural Acne Remedies Better Than Chemicals?

If you're like most people, at one time or another you suffered from acne

. Acne does not just affect teenagers, but people of all ages. Here are a few acne remedies used down through the ages for treating this embarrassing problem.

In the ancient world, acne was treated mainly with herbs, accompanied with spells and charms from medicine men. In Roman times hot mineral baths were a very popular. These baths contained high amounts of sulfur, which later became a very popular method of treating acne. In the 1920's benzoil peroxide was a popular medicine for treating acne and still remains so today. When applied it is able to dry the acne and let the skin heal itself through an antibiotic like effect on the skin.

It was not until the later half of the twentieth century that the popular medication Accutane was introduced. Able to work with just one treatment, this powerful medicine restricts the body's production of oil that causes acne. Unfortunately, it was recently discovered that Accutane can be unsafe for women that are pregnant, and as such has fallen out of favor with many dermatologist for being too harsh. Despite its dangers, for years was a reliable remedy for millions of people who have suffered from acne.

Other acne treatments, such as laser surgery, have become popular as a way of reducing the scar tissue caused by very severe acne. Another method of treatment involves burning the glands that are responsible for the production of the oil that causes acne.

Many treatments these days are moving away from risky chemicals and going back to the original remedies, such as sulfur baths and spa treatments. As with many medical procedures of our time, using natural ingredients and homeopathic cures seems to be the natural progression. Hopefully in the future, there will be very effective and safe acne remedies that everyone can use.
