Are Paint Sprayers Better Than Roller And Brush?

Since their initial inception, there has been debate on paint sprayers and their potential versus the potential of the classic roller and brush

. Due to the fact that rollers and brushes have been the absolute tools of the painting trade for years, there is some natural reluctance in new methods, such as spraying. Many have used spraying methods however, and are reluctant to go back to painting and brushing. The debate over which method is better has thus formed, dividing the painting world into the rollers and the sprayers. Perhaps it's possible both have earned rightful claims at being definitive tools of the painting trade.

Paint sprayers really didn't reach the household consumer market until the 1990's. It wasn't until this time that the spraying methods employed already for a century had become compact, refined in design, and affordable to the general homeowner. At this point, the public could readily access and make its own assessment on spraying paint instead of rolling and brushing it on. As time has gone by since the 1990's, sprayers have continued their regular market presence and have become a diverse group with many shapes, sizes, and abilities.

Sprayers typically entail a paint holding vessel or area, a pump, multiple nozzles, valves, suction tubes, and an applicator such as a wand or gun. Most sprayers are battery or plug-in powered with electricity. Preparing the device involves adding the paint to be used, and setting valves and making any adjustments specified by the manufacturer. This setup is fairly simple with most sprayers.

The process of spraying is unique and by its nature can cover a lot of ground quickly. As most sprayers today have adjustable spray patterns, one can fan out the pattern for covering more ground quicker, or narrow it for heavier yet smaller area application. The person spraying will use a long sweeping motion from left to right or top to bottom. This is to ensure even spray with no running or "orange peel effect". This sweeping motion can enable the painter to cover large areas uniformly and relatively quickly. Depending on the sprayer's holding capacity and the size of the paint job being done, the operator will need to stop and refill the machine's paint vessel several times when needed.

Technically speaking, paint spraying machines could be considered to have many advantages and even a few disadvantages. Covering large areas uniformly and quickly is a definite advantage. When rolling and brushing, there is considerable slowing because of the small area that can only be covered between dips for additional paint. The sprayer can also move with you, whereas rollers, pans, brushes, and hand containers must all be moved along with the job. However, over-spray is an issue exclusive to spraying. This simply means to spray things that were not intended to be painted. This can be prevented with job preparations but can also eat up some time. The spraying machine must also be properly cleaned so as to function properly next time. This involves breaking it down and cleaning many parts; also a time taker.

There are prep and cleanup steps to brush and roller methods as well. There are also the issues of moving many items repeatedly versus a sprayer and paint, inconsistencies in pattern and appearance, and constant dipping for more paint. All of this is why sprayers are interchangeable with rollers and brushes for many painters today. Some jobs are absolutely ideal for a sprayer, while others are not. Either way, the sprayer is now a rightful tool of the trade.
