Are Tablet Computers The Next Big Thing?

Over the last few years weve noticed a systematic decline in the price of laptop computers

. This drop in price has been a great thing for consumers but has led many to wonder whether the laptop will soon be and antiquated piece of equipment taking up shelf space with the likes of the eight track tape player and the typewriter. While laptops do provide a great option for people who are looking for mobile computing it does seem that some better options are coming up on the table.

For a while it seemed that notebook computers were going to be the next big thing in portable computing. Notebooks offered a highly movable tool that people could use for many of the daily computer requirements. The problem most notebooks seems to be that the combination of a very small keyboard along with a typically less-than-desired amount of computing power as turn the notebook into a sort of no mans land of computing. While many people do like the features that notebooks offer, I think that many more are turned off by the small keyboard and lack of power that typically accompanies most notebooks.

So what is there to fill the void if you dont want a laptop because its too bulky, and dont want a notebook because its too underpowered and too small? I think the answer may come in the form of the tablet PC. Tablets seem to offer a decent amount of computing power at the moment and typically provide a touch screen keyboard that, while tricky, might end up being a better alternative to the overly small keyboards on notebook computers. I think that the faults the tablet PCs will have to overcome a relatively small, and thus they very well could be poised to take on a bigger chunk of the laptop market. One of the problems with tablet PCs, the touch screen keyboard, may not be as big of a problem as it seems to be. For anyone whos ever used a smart phone with a touch screen and you know that typically doesnt take very long to get adjusted to the touch screen, I think that this will be the case for tablets as well. In terms of power I think the tablets will quickly evolve, become more powerful, and be offered at a better price. So Id have to say that in terms of portability, features, and price tag, that tablets will be the next generation of personal portable computing.
