Are The Most Searched Keywords Always The Best Ones?
One of the key components to doing keyword research is determining the estimated search volume for the keyword
. In other words, most researchers want to know how many times a day the keyword is searched. While keyword search volume is an important metric, does higher always mean better?
All other things being equal, the answer would be yes. Unfortunately, the other things are frequently not all equal. So how can you know if you've found the best keyword to use? You will need to compare some of those other things.
So what other things affect the quality of a keyword? One of the biggest is relevancy. You will want to ensure that the keyword you are targeting means the same thing to your searchers as it means to you. For example, you might be looking for keywords related to the word "breakup," and find that the most searched keywords are actually related to the movie, "The Breakup," rather than to a couple breaking up. This could make those keywords irrelevant to your intended target audience.
Another factor that can affect keyword quality is correct usage. This is where words are apparently searched in an order that makes them difficult and awkward to put into a sentence. The words may be transposed, or simply in an awkward order. While these keywords may apparently get many searches, the searchers are generally not looking to find the keywords in that order in an article.
When something like this occurs, it is often best to use your common sense and use the meaning behind the keyword to create an article that makes sense. You could then target your off-page efforts toward the awkward phrase. As long as it is relevant, as mentioned above, this can increase your chances of ranking by reducing your bounce rate, or the percentage of visitors who immediately hit the back button to try another site.
One other consideration, especially when trying to rank your page in the search engine results, is the strength of your competition for the given keyword phrase. Often times, those search terms with the highest volume of searches also have the greatest level of competition, making it significantly more difficult to achieve a high search engine ranking.
By looking for keywords with lower competition, you will have a greater chance at getting your content to rank on the first page of results, which means that a far greater number of searchers will be presented with your page as a choice. Having content show up on the twentieth page of results for a keyword that gets 100 times as many searches as a keyword where you're content is on the first page, you will most likely find you get much more traffic from the one on the first page, despite the large difference in search volume.
While it is important to look at the volume of searches to ensure that you aren't wasting your time competing for pages that will not bring you any significant traffic, there are these other factors to consider. And if you take these factors into consideration, you're likely to find better results over using search volume alone.
