First, make sure you do several brick workouts in the weeks leading up to your first race. A brick workout is combining both cycling and running into one workout. You start your run immediately after you finish cycling to simulate what it will feel like during the race. These workouts are crucial from a physical fitness perspective but also from a mental perspective you have to be mentally prepared for what your legs will feel like when you try to run after a hard bike session.

Brick workouts increase your aerobic stamina by making a single workout longer and more demanding. You'll develop your aerobic base even more as you start layering runs on top of cycling workouts and ultimately, you will get faster.
