Are You Sitting Comfortably?

I don't know about you, but one of many details that I recall from my childhood is my father and mother reading books to me and my sister

. I aim to cultivate similar memories for my small children, not least because it provided me with a eternal love of stories. The best childrens books can lead to a freedom from the real world or educate them about life, they give them an opportunity to expand their vocabulary and language expertise, and also their all round knowledge. So it's obvious, I take pleasure in books and I want my kids to enjoy them as much as I do.

You will discover classics that I have memories of from my early years that happen to be still hugely well-known today. In some instances that might be because the current era of movie directors also have happy memories of particular stories. In recent years 'Where the Wild Things Are' has been turned into a film, the whole run of CS Lewis' 'Chronicles of Narnia' is currently being dramatised plus a new Winnie the Pooh movie has made an appearance. Even though motion pictures might be one particular method to get your small children interested in books, do not undervalue the capacity of a great book or brilliant illustration to seize any youngster's awareness.

Picture books represent the foremost step. Infants and toddlers are able to learn colours, shapes, facial expressions and animals from vivid board books which are usually a good example of one-to-one care from a mum or dad, older brother or sister or other loved one. It is rewarding to watch your small student learning the best way to describe their environment. When my daughter was only three she taught my one year old son the elementary shapes, with a Dora the Explorer book. As rewarding as this phase may be, I'd say it becomes much more pleasurable for mom and dad when the children move on to stories.

It can be heartwarming the moment your son or daughter falls in love with a story that you yourself grew up with. Winnie the Pooh is one case in point which has been beloved by three generations of my relatives. It virtually seems to be a terrible omission if there isn't a Winnie the Pooh story on a young kid's bookcase. Although being honest I don't recall meeting a four year old who couldn't recall the names of Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and Pooh Bear himself. Yet another fantastic classic, that looks to be undergoing a resurgence of popularity, is the Very Hungry Caterpillar. This fabulous book, illustrated in a easily recognisable fashion, has the nifty feature of holes in the pages where the caterpillar has eaten through a variety of foods. I'm sure this book can take a great deal of the credit for youngsters who fully grasp where butterflies come from.

I believe it is fair to say that there happen to be a couple of books written in the past decade that are well on the way to turning into classics in their own right. I would be very surprised if my future grandchildren weren't introduced to the Gruffalo very early on in their lives. The blend of Julia Donaldson's witty words and Axel Schleffer's brilliant illustrations have created a modern day masterpiece popular with kids and parents alike. The story of the Gruffalo and many of Donaldson's other works, like 'Monkey Puzzle' and 'What the Ladybird Heard', I'm pleased to say, will be here for countless years to come.
