Are you someone who works hard or works smart?
Are you someone who works hard or works smart
?
Do you live a busy life that feels being on a treadmill constantly? You are Working Hard.
If you happen to enjoy your work, you may even find it a greater challenge getting off that treadmill - always busy, always in a rush, always trying to catch up, always working hard.
It can be particularly challenging when running your own business. We live in a fast, competitive age where people expect results of quality yesterday and technology while it might be convenient, has done as much to raise people's expectations of each other, than to help take the pressure off the daily work tasks.
More and more people are questioning their own personal happiness while trying to juggle their priorities at work. It seems as though running your business can be like being there for everyone else, providing for them, from employee to customer, where your needs are well down the list of priorities.
While you may even enjoy your work and commitment, the fact is that the business can be running you, rather than you running the business. Right? This is an easy if not inevitable situation to find yourself in, especially with a family to support, mortgage to pay, wages etc. etc. It is not always easy downing your tools for time off without feeling you are neglecting important work at the same time.
Do you know what our most common personal drivers are? In no particular order:
Not wanting to let others down
Fear of failure
Fear of success
Wanting others' approval
Fear of the opposition getting ahead
Fear of losing income
What do these Personal Drivers have in common? They are all negative states of mind. While the challenges may sometimes be real, they all represent negative thinking, fear and need. Most of us are carrying one or more of these patterns.
Now compare these turnarounds on each point:
Knowing you can deliver
You are confident of your success
Being happy and proud of your achievements
Not governed by what others might think and say
You thrive on a challenge
You ensure you have a consistent income
The first approach is working hard. The second is working smart. Do not confuse this with laziness or self- indulgence. Working smart will always serve you better. You probably know that already. The big question is: which way are you spending your working time? Working hard: In a muddle, stressed and feeling tired? Or working smart: in control, fulfilled and relaxed within your self? Guess which state of mind will you make the better company to be around?
It is no secret that those who work smart are often better off financially, emotionally and healthily. It is not that they necessarily work less. They work more efficiently. They use their energy more efficiently in a more balanced way. Energy misspent is energy wasted. That costs you in finances, time and in health (eventually).
If we are willing to even consider working smart, we will find it to the best antidote to modern day stress, and the positive benefits to you just keep on coming and coming.
"We do not need more strength or more ability or greater opportunity. What we need, is to use what we already have."
Basil Walsh
Isn't reassuring to know we have already got it - the secret is to make sure we are using it!
