It is Siri, an artificial intelligence system in your iPhone 4S. Siri has been given a personality to not only provide you with solutions but also to humor you at times. You ask "Siri, Do I want to wear my jacket today." on a cold chilly morning, and it says "Yes wear your jacket, the temperature is low", You ask "Siri, Will you marry me" and it replies "lets just remain friends, OK.". The replies given in its robotic tone can make you laugh when you are really low.

Siri's Development

Before Apple Inc's purchase of Siri in April of 2010, it was decided to be released on devices of Android and Blackberry. DARPA, the research agency under which CALO project for Siri was started, is the company that provided funds for Siri's development. To come up with this AI app, researchers took over 40 years. Researchers from major universities like Stanford University, University of Rochester, and University of Southern California have also been involved with this project.

Technology Used in Siri

Voice recognition is the technology on which Siri is based. Siri has been released in its beta version now. The app is going to be developed to a final version soon by the research teams. English, German and French are the languages the app recognizes. Siri can be ported on iPhone 4S's predecessor iPhone 4 and also on other Apple devices like the iPod Touch music player and the iPad tablet. It can work if there is a connection to the internet either from 3G or Wi-Fi settings. The app can be accessed by pressing the home button and holding it for sometime.

What Does Siri Hold for Future

Like mentioned before, Siri is still in its Beta stage. Guess how big an impact Siri will have when it is made into a fully developed software. New changes are being brought in the technology world owing to release Siri. With the advent of social media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook, people find it easier to socialize with everyone without having to meet face to face. Now with Siri, you can feel like you do not just have a virtual assistant but also a friend. Ask it to tell you a joke and it replies with some smart answers that can make you laugh. Siri has led us to believe that the future technological developments can make devices that can behave like real people. You may ask "dont we already have robots.". The answer is "yes". But the actions of a robot are determined by its software program. But what about a life like robot which can sit with you and share your thoughts and manage to reply just like you wanted.. Seems like a very far away dream, but with Siri, everything can happen.

Nobody had thought Siri was going to be a reality someday. There is nothing that cannot be done today with the help of technology and Siri is proving it to be true. And who knows, the results of such researches may stun us this time too.
