Artists And Noble Pets
She was about eight years old when this female painter got her first dog
. What the small Boston terrier did was make a lasting impression on the girl before it died that same year. When it comes to noble pets, they hold special roles in her life. As an accomplished painter, she specializes in portraits of dogs.
Chances are, if it was a Sunday afternoon, she will be at the public library reading every dog book and magazine she could find. A professional dog handler was what she wanted to become early on being able to show dogs in trials and dog shows.
She was 13 and all of her free time was spent drawing and sketching the animals in different dog shows. Painting with oils as well as making portraits of dogs were things a friend encouraged her to try at 16.
Yes she was able to paint abstracts, landscapes, sea scapes, and other subjects rather well but she decided to select this specialty of hers. Early on she was already able to create and sell a number of dog portraits and this made her feel that she made the right decision.
Dogs were owned by members of the family and these were what she used for the portraits. She made a picture of their own Boston terrier that was displayed by a local pet shop after they put up a notice about her paintings.
When it comes to a large measure of her progress, she credits two paintings. The first painting was of charlie black which is a captivating little mongrel restored to health and adopted as a mascot by the animal humane association. The other painting was of the handsome champion phantom of the ice flue, the Alaskan malamute.
Taking a Labrador retriever into consideration, the head and expression make the dog. When it comes to a black dog, not only is hard to photograph one but painting it is even harder. There was a painting she made of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen's tomb which was unusual. There were Egyptian symbols in the background.
Occasionally someone asks her to do a portrait of another kind of pet, she has done a few horses. Her husband's help has been tangible as well as psychological. He made the specially designed table that holds her paints and brushes.
Not only did she make the specially crafted easels and display stands but stained them too and she shows her work using these. The largest portrait she ever made was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador.
Smoother dogs are easier to paint than the longer coated ones. No dog is ever posed. Holding its head just right is impossible for dogs.
For an hour, she observes the animal carefully and from this she is able to remember its sheen, the color of its coat, its typical stance, and the evident personality or character traits it may have. She is rather talented as people say in recording such traits onto a canvas.
Snapshots provided by the owners are what she uses. When an owner is not able to give her a picture than she takes one herself and then blow it up on the screen. She lets the people she paints for choose details such as backgrounds.
The rest want it plain and some may opt to choose sceneries. Due to family commitments, she is only able to do a portrait a month. Aside from taking vacations, she also catches up with her housework.
