What's the most honest U.S. city? In a 2012 very unscientific survey, the makers of Honest Tea set up unstaffed stands in cities and towns around the country. The stands contained bottles of tea priced $1 and a container for the customers to put their money. About 10,000 people participated in 50 monitored locations. Salt Lake City, Utah and Oakland, California were 100% honest followed by Boulder, Colorado (99%) and San Francisco, California (97%). Boston, Massachusetts; Cincinnati, Ohio; Galveston, Texas; and Seattle, Washington tied (96%). Brooklyn, New York was the most dishonest (61%). That's where honest definitely ended with "tea".

Vermont is the most inventive state. That's based on 2011 patent activity. Vermont had 3.50 patents/1,000 residents. It has a large IBM manufacturing facility and vital science, food manufacturing and microbrewing industries. Massachusetts had 3.43 patents/1,000 residents. It has university-based research at MIT and Harvard, as well as startups formed by graduates from those universities. California's world-class research universities contribute to its 3.33 patents/1,000 residents. It's also the hub of technology, telecom, bioengineering and biomedicine companies. In fact, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is opening its first satellite office in Silicon Valley - a "patent" move to cut red tape.

Wyoming has the best tax environment for business. According to the Tax Foundation's 2012 report, Wyoming has no income or corporate taxes and a low sales tax. South Dakota was ranked a close second. It also has no income or corporate taxes and a low sales tax. Nevada was third. Again no income or corporate taxes, but Nevada has a high sales tax - 6.85%. New York had the worst tax environment for business. Although it has a low sales tax, its income tax is huge and its corporate tax is mid-range. Not surprisingly, New York's motto is "Excelsior" - ever upward.

New York is also the state with the biggest gap between rich and poor. That's based on 2011 Census Bureau figures. The "Gini coefficient" is a ratio between zero and one, reflecting equality at zero and a concentration of wealth, extreme poverty and a limited middle class as the ratio increases. New York's Gini coefficient was 0.5033 followed by Connecticut (0.4859), Louisiana (0.4836), New Mexico (0.4821), California (0.4812), Florida (0.4811), Massachusetts (0.4771), Texas (0.4771), Georgia (0.4770) and Tennessee (0.4756). The national average is 0.0476. Since the 1970's income equality has increased almost 20%. "Occupy Wall Street" should occupy our minds.
