As The Weather Warms-up Outdoor Activities Increase- Take Extra Precautions To Prevent Child Dental Emergencies
As April showers bring way to May flowers and warmer weather, children take their energy outdoors. When the weather gets warmer, playgrounds are often the first choice for kids to play. Accidents that cause tooth injuries occur mostly from falling off playground swings, diving into shallow pools, baseball, skateboarding, in-line skating and bicycling. Children often hang, swing and jump from playgrounds which increase their chances for injury. If your child experiences a tooth injury during these warm seasons, it is important to follow proper first aid steps for loose or knocked out teeth. If a tooth is loose, attempt to push the tooth back into its original position using very light finger pressure. Have your child bite down so that tooth does not move, and call Dr. Feffer, your dentist in Lincoln Park, for emergency care. For a tooth that is completely knocked out, pick the tooth up by the crown and not by the root. If you handle the tooth by the root, it may cause damage to the cells that are necessary for bone re-attachment and delay the replant. Place the tooth in a container of milk or saliva to protect the tooth and visit your dentist as soon as possible. The longer a tooth is out of the mouth, the less likely the tooth is to be saved. Follow Pool RulesRules at the swimming pool are in place to help protect children from injury. Following the rules and remembering dental first aid steps can help save your child's teeth the next time they dive into a swimming pool. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, swimming pool accidents are the number-one cause of dental emergencies when it is warm out. When children swim under water they often quickly come to the surface which can cause some to hit the hard ledge of the pool, loosening the front tooth or teeth. Additionally, running on slippery, slick cement and ceramic pool surfaces can send your child head first into the ground. This can account for chipped or displaced teeth. What to do When a Tooth is Chipped or FracturedChipped teeth are minor fractures, while damage to the enamel, tissue, and/or pulp is considered a moderate fracture. Severe fractures often mean that a tooth have been traumatized to the point that it cannot be recovered. If your child fractures their tooth, have them rinse their mouth with warm water and use an ice pack or cold compress to reduce swelling and contact your dentist immediately. If the tooth fragment is found, please bring it to Dr. Feffer. Using composite bonding techniques, the fractured part of the tooth may be able to be reattached.Additionally, by packing an emergency dental kit you can be even more prepared. An emergency kit often includes: Your dentist's phone numbers Saline solution Handkerchief Gauze Small container with lid Pain medicationActing quickly is the best way to preserve teeth and prevent more serious dental damage. Remain calm and call, Dr. Feffer, your Lakeview and Lincoln Park dentist for more guidelines on what to do if your child experiences a dental emergency.
