Asacol 400 mg (mesalamine) is a medicine used in treating ulcerative colitis and proctitis, proctosigmoiditis. Other commonly used names of Asacol are Pentasa, Salofalk, Mesasal, Mesalazine, Sulfasalazine, 5-aminosalicylic acid and 5-AS. It is also used in preventing the relapse of the symptoms of ulcerative colitis. There is an agent in the body that triggers inflammation, tissue damage and diarrhoea, and Ascacol 400 mg attacks the root of this agent to eliminate these occurrences. The drug also contains the active anti inflammatory ingredient, aminosalicylic acid. Asacol may also be prescribed to treat mild or moderate Crohn's disease and help prevent it from occurring again.
Asacol 400 mg Contra Indications
The medication is not recommended for those ailing with pyloric stenosis, congestive heart failure, kidney and liver disease, as Asacol 400 mg might exacerbate the existing conditions. More importantly, inform the doctor about any other medication you are taking concurrently as there may be undesirable drug interactions. The tablet can be taken with water before or after meals as per the physician's instructions. It is important not to chew or bite the tablet, but to swallow it whole, since the medication has a specific acrylic based resin coating that protects the stomach lining. However, preparations which lower stool pH, for example, lactulose, should not be given with Mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid), as it can prevent release of the active ingredient. Symptoms of over dosage of Asacol 400 mg include salicylism. Although there is no specific procedure for the over dosage of Asacol, speedy gastric lavage is recommended by physicians.

The medication should be kept out of the reach of children and pets, and away from heat, moisture and light. Asacol 400 mg should be stored in a tightly closed container at room temperature, between 15-30 degree centigrade.
