Aspirin May Cut The Risk Of Prostate Cancer

Good news for men, taking a low dose of aspirin every day could trim down the risk of prostate cancer by 30 %

. A new study claimed that a low dose of aspirin, 75mg tablet taken daily has a great protecting effect against prostate cancer. Aspirin is a widely used and low-priced medicine. The researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center believe this painkiller acts by blocking the effect of enzymes that cause inflammation, a main reason in the development of prostate cancer. The study conducted looked at the effects of aspirin on risk of prostate cancer.

For the purpose, the study team examined 1,001 patients diagnosed with prostate cancer and compared them with 942 cancer-free healthy volunteers. All participants were requested to fill questionnaire form which included information on general well being, diet and physical exercise habits, life style and family history. Information on aspirin use, if any, was also collected.

The basic results showed that prostate cancer was more common in Africa American men. The general comparison indicated that individuals who were cancer free were using low dose aspirin more frequently than patients having prostate cancer. The researcher workers found that men who had ever taken aspirin were 18% less likely develop prostate cancer compared to those who had never taken aspirin.

Aspirin intake for more than five years was related with 24% reduction in risk of prostate cancer. Similarly, the highest protective action was seen in men who took regular daily low dose of aspirin. The risk was slashed down by 29% compared non users of aspirin. Current users of aspirin were found to have 21% reduction in risk of disease. Interestingly, it was also noted that taking other anti inflammatory medication or paracetamol was not linked to the reduced risk of prostate cancer.

In conclusion, the study suggested a link between daily low dose aspirin use and reduced risk of prostate cancer. The study team trusted that the results provided the evidence of protective role of aspirin against prostate cancer in men. However, to make the results more useful from clinical point of view, further research is required A randomized controlled trial would be the best option.

Its also important to note that increased intake of aspirin and other NSAIDs ie: Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs can lead to other problems. Most commonly encountered is the increase risk of gastric ulcers. Therefore the potential use of aspirin may be limited due to the other side effects which aspirin may cause.
