Assorted Types Of Hydroponic Systems

When someone thinks of a hydroponic system there are six basic types used in the

construction and utilization of the hydroponic method of growing plants. A couple types of hydroponic system are the wick, water culture and ebb and flow, these basic systems are often mixed together to meet the needs of a specific situation. No two plants or situations are alike and depending on your needs, goals and financial budget you may find that "variations on a theme" are necessary for your project. Choosing the right type of growing system is the first step in creating a successful grow room, outlines of the main six types of systems available are outlined below.

The easiest type of hydroponic system to utilize is the Wick system, it has no moving parts which makes it very easy to maintain and implement. Nutrients are drawn into the soil from the liquid reservoir with a wick. There are many places online to find a simple wick hydroponic system through a simple online search. Many different mediums (soils) can be used including perlite, vermiculite and coconut fiber. The only warning where a wick system is concerned is in regard to a large plant consuming nutrients faster than a wick can supply them.

The water culture system is another easy hydroponic system to implement. The platform that holds the plants is typically made of Styrofoam and floats directly on top of the nutrient solution. An air pump supplies air to the air stone and that creates bubbles that carry the nutrient solution as well as supply oxygen to the roots of the plants. Water culture is a great choice to use for growing things such as lettuce and other plants that grow fast and consume a lot of water. This type of system is typically a teaching tool used in classrooms for science education.

The Ebb and Flow system consists of a hydroponic system that temporarily floods the grow tray with nutrient solution and then drains the solution back into the water tray under the plants. This portion of Ebb and Flow system is completed by a submerged pump that is activated by a timer, when the timer is activated the nutrient solution is pumped onto the grow the grow tray and after a certain period of time it is drained back underneath into the water tray. This timer is set to go off several times a day at a certain interval for optimal growth conditions for whatever it is you are growing. The type of growth medium you are using, your projected needs and level of humidity are all factors in how much it is you are attempting to cultivate.

The types of systems here are not set in stone, they can be modified to suit the needs of your grow operation and should be seen more as outlines and less as a set of "rules" to abide by. Always know what your needs are before starting a grow project and make sure that you have all the necessary materials and knowledge before pursuing a project with hydroponic systems.
