Astrological Planets in relation to Ayurvedic Doshas

Ayurveda stands on the principle of Tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha), which are considered as the three primary biological forces. This concept of doshas is similar to the biological humors of ancient Greek thought.

The first and foremost of the tridoshas is Vata, which is indeed a principle of energy and movement. It can be connected to the wind and the air element. The second; Pitta is a principle of light, heat and combustion that can be connected to the Sun and the fire element. Likewise, the third one; Kapha is a principle of matter, inertia and preservation connecting to the Moon and the water element. In physics, energy, light and matter are the three main factors in the world that can be converted into one another; Vata, Pitta and Kapha being their biological counterparts.

In the Vedic Asrology, there are seven classical planets namely The Sun, The Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. In addition to these, the two lunar nodes, the north node or Dragon's head called Rahu and the south node or Dragon's tail called Ketu. These are the nine planets of importance in classical Vedic Astrology along with Uranus, Neptune and Pluto with relatively less important. The planets are considered to be the carriers and transmitters of cosmic influences. They are said to be reflect karmic and pranic energies on both individual and collective levels. Therefore, we can describe them as the doshas like the tridoshas (biological humors) as they sustain the human life through their proper function; moreover, they can cause inharmonious effect when in excess or out of balance.

The correlation between Ayurvedic doshas and Astrological planets can be extracted with three planets corresponding to each of the three doshas:

Vata dosha Saturn, Mercury, Rahu

Pitta dosha Sun, Mars, Ketu

Kapha dosha Moon, venus, Jupiter

Vata planets:

Saturn is the ruler of the whole Vata system, specially over elimination including colon, which is the main site of accumulation of Vata, behind the disease process. Saturn causes most of the Vata disorders from arthritis to nervous system disorders and ll manners of chronic diseases and conditions of debility. A the Vata dosha in Ayurveda is said to cause the most numerous and severe disease of all three doshas, Saturn is the general indicator of disease and poor health. Thus, the inimical position of Saturn in the Birth chart is considered for health implications.

Rahu is the planet with unpredictable action. It is said to be like Saturn with a subtler action. It causes mental and nervous system disorders as well as mysterious and degenerative diseases often with a sudden and rapid onset and quick development. The combined influence of Saturn and Rahu appears behind the severe Vata conditions and major health disorders from the cancer to nervous breakdowns of severe mental disorders.

Mercury is a mutable and impressionable planet so that it takes upon itself the influence of other planets it is associated with. So, it cal be related to all three doshas. But, predominantly, it corresponds to nervous system, mind, communication and rapid motion. As it represents child and youth form, it can be a good indicator for the health of children. Likewise, it is crucial for psychological aspects owing to its connetion with the mind.

Pitta planets:

The Sun is the general indicator of physical vitality and the positive reflector of Prana or vital energy. It rules the whole of Pitta system from digestive system toi the eyes and perceptive aspect of the mind. A weakly placed Sun in the Birth chart causes health and vitality problems generally of a chronic and persistant nature starting with weak digestion and poor metabolism.

Mars governs Pitta more specifically through male energy, ehich is fiery and aggressive in nature. It is more likely to cause Pitta type diseases than the Sun and indicates fever, inflammation, infection and acute conditions. It also causes reckless action and accidents which require surgical interventions. It is the main planet for examination of Pitta disorders and second to Saturn for most disease promoting planets.

Ketu resembles Mars in a subtle way. It involves in coordination and strength of muscular system including the onset of neuro-muscular problems. It indicates accidents, injuries, wounds, particularly those owing to collective factors like wars or catastrophes. With the combination of Mars and Ketu, severe pitta problems and violence are likely.

Kapha planets:

The Moon is the governor of all the Kapha systems. It rules over the emotions and contributes to a good Kapha constitution. Affliction to the Moon impacts health in infants and psychology as well. However, its changeable phases like New Moon give some Vata qualities in the Moon.

Venus governs Kapha in a specific way through female energy which is watery in nature and special connection with reproduction. It causes disease mainly through luxury, dissipation or self-indulgence even when the basic constitution may not be weak.

Jupiter is the planet that creates bulk in the body. It represents more the active side of Kapha energy. It is the planet of positive health. It indicates the benefic influence of the soul and its healing energy. It also governs the mental aspect of Kapha giving a steady and profound intelligence with emotional sensitivity, serenity and faith. However, it can cause disease through self-indulgence of complacency.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto:

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can be corresponded more in a collective level. Uranus has an electrical energy and erratic action like Vata. Neptune has a watery and imaginative energy like Kapha. Pluto has a fiery enery like Pitta.

Therefore, there is no harm in knowing such correlation between Ayurveda and Astrology. A physician can take optimum benefit from such knowledge to treat different diseases as the sole objective of a physician is to cure his/her patients and maintain a good health no matter how you fulfill that goal.
