Asus EeePC 1215N
Now, the Asus EeePC 1215N picks up where its predecessor leaves off
, jamming in a nettop processor into a netbook frame. It's a speedy netbook, and even more so with Nvidia's Ion graphics. Just don't expect battery life to be anywhere near that of the Toshiba mini NB305-N410 or HP Mini 5102.
Design
I find it odd that Asus didn't do more with the 1215N's design, considering all the envelope pushing it has done with other EeePC models[
ASUS laptop battery]. The gloss of its predecessor is gone, replaced by a matte black top that will still need a Windex wipe from time to time. It's neither as forward-thinking as the metals found in the HP 5102 nor as trendy as the textures found in the Toshiba NB305-N410 and Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 . Thanks to a 12-inch widescreen, the 1215N ranks as one of the biggest netbooks, alongside the Lenovo IdeaPad S12. At 3.3 pounds, it's a travel-friendly computer, although smaller ones like the Toshiba NB305-N410 , HP 5102 , and Acer Aspire AO521-3782 have a significant edge in portability.
The 12-inch widescreen is the cut-off point between a netbook and regular laptop. It's easier on the eyes than a 10-inch one, plus a bigger screen comes with a higher resolution. Netbooks like the Acer AO521-3782 and Toshiba NB305-N410 are limited to a 1,024 by 600 resolution; the 1215N can fit more with its HD-capable 1,366 by 768 (720p) yesscreen. As for the keyboard, I've typed on better ones. There shouldn't be any reason why Asus can't pull off a full size (19cm pitch) keyboard, when Toshiba and Acer have been doing it consistently on the 10-inch platform. As it stands, the keyboard measures 96% of full size, and although you'll hear few complaints from touch typists, there's definitely room for growth here, literally. The touchpad, meanwhile, is enormous for a netbook and very user friendly. I wish I could say the same about the mouse buttons. Instead of focusing on the aesthetics, Asus should make a pair that clicks without resistance and noise. That said, better navigating components can be had with the Toshiba NB305-N410 [

Features
Features and port selection are basically carried over from the original Asus 1201N. The 1215N has 3 USB ports and is USB 3.0-ready (10x the speed of USB 2.0), though you won't see it with this version. An HDMI port is present, as it is a constant in netbooks that run on Nvidia-based graphics. Netbooks like the Toshiba NB305-N410 and HP Mini 5102 don't have HDMI ports and instead rely on VGA for outputting video. A memory card reader (SD and MMC) can be found on the side of the 1215N's chassis, along with VGA and an Ethernet port. The 250GB (5,400rpm) hard drive is a consistent capacity with the current crop of netbooks, even with ones that are as cheap as $300. Still, it's spacious enough for any videophile and avid photographer.
Performance
The 1215N is the only netbook that runs on an Intel dual-core processor. More interestingly, it's a variant used in nettops, called the Atom D525 (1.8GHz). And keep in mind Intel just launched the Atom N550 (1.5GHz), a dual-core processor made specifically for netbooks, but I suppose the timing was a little too late for the 1215N. In terms of actual performance numbers, the 1215N is the fastest Atom netbook out there. Video encoding tests finished in record time: 2 minutes 53 seconds, although any laptop with a Core i3 processor can do it in half the time. Because it has a dual-core processor, it was the only netbook that qualified for a Cinebench R10 score (1,681). Its SYSMark 2007 score (53), which measures overall performance, pummeled other netbooks like the Toshiba NB305-N410 (38) and HP Mini 5102 (38). It barely edged the Acer AO521-3782 (52), which runs on a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon II Neo K125.
The other part of the speed equation is graphics power, which the 1215N has enough of to playback 1080p HD content at various bit rates, but not enough to run a game like Crysis. Nvidia's Ion graphics handles 2D games like World of Warcraft and online games very well, and can even handle light 3D gaming to some extent, as evidenced by its 3DMark06 scores (2,941). Contrary to its 10-inch counterparts, the 1215N also benefits from Nvidia's Optimus technology, an automatic switching graphics system that summons the more powerful graphics chip when an application calls for it. Otherwise, many day-to-day tasks default to the Intel GMA 3150 (integrated graphics), such as working off of the AC adapter, checking e-mail, and word processing.
The boost in graphics power and an extra core can take a toll on battery life. Thankfully, the 1215N's 56WH (6-cell) battery was able to offset some of it. Its 5 hour 40 minute score in MobileMark 2007 is marginally better than its AMD counterparts, namely the Acer AO521-3782 (5:03) and LenovoX100e (5:23). However, it didn't even come close to the kind of battery life smaller netbooks get with a similar size battery. The Toshiba NB305-N410 (8:59) and HP 5102 (10:52) are better road warriors.
You won't find a faster netbook or one with better graphics chipset than the Asus EeePC 1215N[
asus battery]. It combines a dual-core Atom processor and an Nvidia Ion graphics chip that other netbooks haven't even attempted yet. The user experience and design need a little work, and battery life isn't going to be anywhere near our Editors' Choice for netbooksthe Toshiba NB305-N410. But it might be worth the $100 premium if the run-of-the-mill netbook is too slow for you.
