The Asus N82JV-X1 is a 14-inch laptop aimed at those in need of a mainstream portable computer

. Although the N82JV-X1 does offer solid performance, its design and features are rather average. At around $900, it seems to be priced a bit high as well. The N82JV-X1 comes with a standard one-year warranty on parts and labor.

The N82JV-X1 has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5-M450 processor that allows the laptop to handle most tasks without any issues whatsoever. The multiple cores of the processor help when you want to run more than one application at the same time. Tasks such as browsing the Internet, editing documents, viewing multimedia, and more are all possible. The laptop also comes with 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM to aid in multitasking.

The design of the Asus N82JV-X1 is rather simple in its form, but it does receive a bit of flair via a lid that has a textured pattern and a dark brown finish. The dark brown color also shows itself around the keyboard and touch pad. The laptop is not the sleekest you will find, but it is portable at 5.1 pounds. The 14-inch LED-backlit display has a resolution of 1,366 x 768. Graphics are decent enough for most tasks, but it is not one of the most impressive displays on a laptop of that size. The integrated Altec Lansing speakers are also rather average, and you will need to wear headphones to really listen to music or movies at a decent level.

The N82JV-X1 comes with a 500 GB hard drive that offers a good amount of storage space. Graphics are supported by an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD card as well as a Nvidia GeForce GT 335M card. The Nvidia card gives the laptop capability to handle modern gaming, and there is also Nvidia Optimus technology included that will switch to the Intel card automatically at times to help preservelaptop battery life. The included eight-celllaptop battery only provides around two hours oflaptop battery life, making the N82JV-X1 a not-so good choice for those needing a highly portable device that can last a long time away from an electrical outlet. Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit comes pre-installed as the operating system.

Beyond the basic hardware, the N82JV-X1 offers some decent extras. There's 802.11n Wi-Fi for connecting to fast wireless networks, as well as an integrated webcam and microphone for video chatting. Asus also includes an 8-in-1 media card reader in case you need to transfer data with other devices. For entertainment purposes, the DVD drive will come in handy. One notable absence in the feature set is that of Bluetooth, which should probably be included, considering the price tag of the laptop.

The keyboard features flat and wide keys that are satisfactory for typing. There is no number pad, however. The touch pad has a good feel to it, and has a single button instead of two separate ones. Connectivity on the N82JV-X1 is very good, as you get a HDMI port, an Ethernet port, a VGA port, an eSATA port, two standard USB ports, a USB 3.0 port, and microphone and headphone jacks.

Although the Asus N82JV-X1 does come with solid performance, a decent feature set, and an acceptable design, it seems as if there are better options out there that should be explored first. For its price tag, the N82JV-X1 just does not have enough to guarantee that it's better than the competition.
