Athletes Foot- Causes And Cures

Athlete's foot is an infection of the feet caused by fungus

. It is also called ringworm of foot or tinea pedis. It is a very common skin disease that affects the sole of the foot and the skin between the toes. It is usually a scaly, red, itchy eruption and occasionally may be weepy and oozing. It affects the feet of athletes and non athletes alike. Although the condition typically affects the feet, it can spread to other areas of the body, including the groin.

Usually people are not even aware that they have an infection and may think that they have dry skin on the soles of their feet. It is on the later stage they realize the disease. Common symptoms of athletes foot are:

Athlete's foot causes scaling, flaking, and itching of the affected skin.

Blisters and cracked skin may also occur, leading to exposed raw tissue, pain, swelling, and inflammation.

Some individuals may experience an allergic response to the fungus called an "id reaction" in which blisters or vesicles can appear in areas such as the hands, chest and arms.

Itchiness with stinging pain.

The infection can be spread to other areas of the body, such as the groin, and usually is called by a different name once it spreads, such as tinea corporis on the body or limbs and tinea cruris (jock itch or dhobi itch) for an infection of the groin. Tinea pedis most often manifests between the toes.

Being a communicable disease it spreads easily to other body parts and to other people also. Mostly transmitted in moist areas where people walk barefoot, such as showers or bathhouses, or public swimming pools which is common between different people, sharing footwear with infected person and likewise.

The fungi causing athletes foot can live on wet or moist towel, bathroom floors and footwear, so these infected area should be made less suitable for the athlete's foot fungus to grow. This means keeping the area clean and dry.

Towels should cleaned with disinfectant and dry them nicely before storing.

If you cannot clean footwear then sprinkle some anti-bacterial powder in it before wearing or storing.

Buy shoes that are leather or another breathable material. Occlusive shoe materials, such as vinyl, cause the feet to remain moist, providing an excellent area for the fungus to breed.

Use absorbent socks like cotton that absorbs water away from your feet.

Powders, especially medicated powders such as with miconazole or tolnaftate can help keep your feet dry.

Soak your feet in a drying solution of aluminum acetate.

A homemade remedy of dilute white vinegar soaks using one part vinegar and roughly four parts water, once or twice a day as 10-minute foot soaks may aid in treatment.

If your athletes foot is getting worse even after taking precaution then you must consult a dermatologist or a skin disease specialist for better treatment. Skin doctors often advise you to take oral dose of flucanozole or such anti bacterial with an anti bacterial or anti fungal cream or talc for quick results.
