Attention High Heel Wearers - Protect Your Feet From The Painful Bunion Bump!
In a society where fashion is everywhere, women can often be found sporting an array of high heels
. From sky-high heels to skinny pumps, women can be found wearing some fashionable high heels. However, even if your heels are highly fashionable, your feet may not be happy in them. Keep your feet healthy and happy by avoiding heels, or taking proper preventive measures to protect your playful toes from painful bunion bumps.
What are Bunions?
Also referred to as hallux valgus, a bunion is often described as a bump that forms on the side of the big toe. Even more than just a visible bump, it actually reflects changes in the bony framework of the front part of the foot. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead, which throws the bones out of alignment, producing the bunion's bump.
Bunions are a progressive disorder, beginning with the leaning of the big toe and gradually changing the angle of the bones over the years and slowly producing the characteristic bump, which becomes increasingly prominent. Symptoms will typically appear at later stages, but some people may never have any symptoms. Some common symptoms of bunions include:
*Pain or soreness
*Inflammation and redness
*A burning sensation
*Possible numbness
High Heels do not Always Bring Bad News
There are times when some high heels have the tendency to be healthier for your feet than flats. If you have excessive pronation - which is a condition that causes the foot to flatten - the solution can be a shoe with a slight heel. When a person suffers from excessive pronation, ballet flats just won't do the trick. Ballet flats can increase pronation as it stretches out the calf muscle causing the foot to buckle or flatten. Even more so, the flimsy shoe construction allows the foot to collapse and doesn't successfully support the arch of the foot.
If you desire high heels, make sure the heels are of moderate proportions, not towering, sky-high heels. Purchase a well-constructed quality shoe; especially those that have shock absorbing materials in the ball of the foot. Also, only wear your highest heels for short periods of time. If you choose to wear these heels daily, be sure to take another pair of more comfortable shoes to get to and from work without pain. Keep your higher heels for sitting at your desk.
What if I Have a Bunion?
If you already have a bunion, there are options available for treatment. To reduce the change of damage to the joint, your podiatrist may conduct periodic evaluation and x-rays. Early treatments are aimed at easing the pain of bunions, but they won't reverse the deformity itself. Some conservative treatment methods include:
*Changes in shoewear
*Padding
*Activity modifications
*Medications
*Icing
*Orthotic devices
If non-surgical treatments fail to bring relief to your bunion pain, and when the bunion interferes with daily activities, your podiatrist may discuss surgical options. Talk to your podiatrist in Frederick and Hagerstown for more information on the diagnosis and treatment of your bunion. Even though you may not need to avoid high heels altogether, it is important to choose wisely and protect your feet from pain.
