Attitude of Gratitude in the Workplace - the power of controlling your thoughts
Most of us go through life thinking that we are owed or entitled to a good job, high wages, fair workplace environment, nice interesting work and an even nicer bunch of colleagues. The truth of the matter is life does not often work out that way. And if we are not careful, we might just end up thinking that life really stinks, that everyone at work hates us, we seem to get the worst and least interesting projects to work on and to top it all off, we are not paid what we are worth!
Stop!
This is where I will jump in and say, "Stop! Stop those thoughts!" Perhaps you are not aware of this, but really, you are what you allow yourself to think! Negative thoughts will only set you to have a negative demenour and body language. Which then translates to negative vibes to your colleagues who in turn will respond to you in a , yes, you guessed it, negative manner.
If your work life is unbearable, chances are that it is not too late to change situations and behaviours. But let me be frank. You cannot change your boss' or your colleagues' attitude towards you, but you can start the ball rolling by changing your attitude towards them. I would like to suggest that you begin by changing and controlling your thoughts.
Positive thoughts
Think of good things about your workplace, your colleagues. Wish them well in your thoughts, wish them all the good things in life, eg. good health, good relationships, good worklife balance, etc. Be grateful for their presence in your life, their contribution towards the projects that you are involved in together, be thankful that you have people whom you can learn from.
Be grateful
Not everyone has a job. If you are working at a workplace, you have a job to go to, you are earning your keep. Be grateful for that. Should you have a computer that works and not regularly need to be maintained, be grateful for that. Be appreciative of your situation and of others at work. Ensure that you also let your colleagues know that you appreciate their help and input. Say "Please" and "Thank you" on a regular basis.
Have a spirit of thankfulness.
It is by controlling your thoughts and with a spirit of thankfulness that you will see life from a different perspective, you will discover that life is not just all about how you feel and what you think as individual, but moreso, life is about people and relationships. Continue with your attitude of gratitude in the workplace and you will begin to see the positive effect and changes it brings about in both your boss and colleagues!
Positive thinking won't let you do anything but it will let you do everything better than negative thinking will. - Zig Ziglar
