The Auckland Art Gallery was established in 1888 as one of the very first galleries

in New Zealand which is situated below a hilltop on Albert Park in the central city area of Auckland. The public art gallery is home to the country's extensive collection of international and national art. The gallery is also known as a frequent destination for international art exhibitions.

The art gallery possesses a wide range of contemporary art, architecture and paintings. The age-old gallery that was used as a city council and public library in the early years has gone through a number of renovations from the year 1969 to 1971. The years brought in a number of changes such as a new wing creating larger spaces for artists to showcase their talents and a three-storied building complete with a six-storey clock tower.

Currently, the Auckland Art Gallery is undergoing one of its largest renovation extensions that will be completed in 2011. The newly renovated gallery would mean that artists will be offered an expansion of space extending artwork pieces to around 900 or more in each area. Further to the additional spaces, the gallery will be offering an illustrative education to children and families. Another part of the reconstruction will be the restoration of the original building, ensuring that the 16-floored structure will be reduced to around six.
