Audi A4 1999 Engine Oil Gelling Problem

With sales of more than 1.5 million units since its launch in year 1995, the A4 became the most significant and popular model throughout the UK. The A4 was initially launched as a 4-door saloon to compete with BMWs 3-series in medium size category. It won so many awards for best motor and popular used car choice. In the year 1999, the A4 introduced a facelift model with central ridge, revised bumpers, integrated lower front fog lamps and headlamps. It was the second generation of A4 that the UK witnessed. The interior was also revised; central console and electronic climate control were adjusted in a way to make place for optional satellite navigation system, 5-inch colour television monitor or a stereo system.

Rear electric windows, centre armrest and auto dipping rear view mirror came as standard in SE variation. Later, the A4 was launched with a 1.8-litre turbo with quattro and the power was upgraded to 180bhp. A4 has a four-wheel drive chassis, well proportioned looks and excellent build quality. The diesel engines are extraordinarily economical and CO2 emissions are very low. Whereas, the petrol engines are slightly on slower side but the 1.8-litre turbo are understated motorway flyers.

This car has leather upholstery, air-conditioning, and remote central locking. It does not have a lugging ability like Volvo but it does have a pretty capacious loading bay. Despite of all the efforts Audi has put in, there are some occasional problems with engine failure, timing belt and in 4-cylinder engines; the ignition power stage. Engine oil gelling causes the engines to fail, but with properly scheduled maintenance and on-time oil change, oil gelling can be avoided. This problem was getting out of hand so as a gesture of goodwill, the Audi issued 8-years, unlimited mileage warranty instead of 5-years.

Failure of timing belt was another problem with this vehicle, which caused the car not to start. It is quite possible that the engine gets damaged, if the timing belt breaks during the driving. In 6-cylinder vehicles only, there were some problems of fuel injectors failing rarely. But they were so infrequent that no big fuss was made over it. The failure of the starter, timing belt and ignition coil in 4-cylinder cars were infrequent. Which normally prevent the car from starting properly or start at all. The ABS warning indicator illuminates when the antilock brake system faces any kind of problem, but it is pretty rare though.
