The Audi Q3 is one of the freshest crossovers to ever hit the streets

. One might think that this is just another new small SUV that even questions the existence of the Audi Q5. In part, this may be true but there is one thing about the Audi Q3 that makes it a convincing choice over the Q5: the price. It is thousands less than the Q5 but retains the same endearing characteristics of a rather small but practical SUV.

Blame the BMW X1 and the Range Rover Evoque for the existence of the Audi Q3. This market segment, however, is one of the fastest growing niches in the automotive industry. People could not get enough of small SUVs that share the same compact platform as a normal compact saloon.

With that is mind, it is easy to see why the Audi Q3 is equipped with a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine. Audi will not let the Q3 suffer in terms of engine performance as all engines benefit from forced induction. Two diesel lumps are offered: a 138hp TDI and 174hp TDI. Front-wheel drive comes standard but all-wheel drive remains an option. Rounding up the list of power plants, two petrol engines are also offered in the form of a 167hp TFSI and a 298bhp TFSI. A six-speed manual comes standard on lower trim models while a seven-speed automatic is mated to the engines that produce more power.

The Audi Q3 also comes with the optional Drive Select system that will allow the transmission to de-couple from the engine at high speeds. Driving schools are quick to pronounce that this will remove engine braking and make the car feel unstable at speed. However, the system is smooth and seamless and will save gas on long journeys.
