Audio Video Interleave Or Avi
Every time you watch videos over the internet
, the chances are big that you'll have at least one tab open for streaming sites like Youtube or Megavideo. This is alright, especially if you're going to watch something one time or something just to kill time. Also if you just want to find something funny or interesting to watch. But what if you find something so funny and so interesting, you might want to watch it again and again, probably keep a record of it in your PC? What we do is download these files.
So you try and you successfully download the file that is offered by the website. It's pretty much a heavy file, because it took you awhile to try and download it but the wait is worth it. As you double click said file, you make sure that it's the right one. But you get this weird error message. "Cannot play video; unknown file format". You automatically know your day is ruined. But it's a movie file right? Shouldn't it be easily opened by your up-to-date computer?
To simplify the details of this, AVI files are unlike your normal movie files. They are not file formats to begin with, rather they are wrappers of the said file formats. Like a file cover or case. The AVI file protects the information inside itself, but it will only open to the right type of program kit. We call these kits as compressor-decompressors or codecs for short.
Sharing AVI files is a thing that contributes more to the confusion regarding codecs. You've got a unique codec for your specific move and when you try to share this via the internet, you have to provide the codec needed to open those thousands of AVI files as well. Most websites can provide the codec for you, others can share the codec needed to open your movie file via peer to peer or torrent. Because of the movement and distribution of the new AVI files, the number of codecs running around the net can rival the number of AVI files themselves.
Even Quicktime has had a hard ride. There are so many file types of the same format running around AVI and Quicktime that even Apple has had a hard time keeping track of the different codecs used for their movie files. The standard of this all only applies to mainstream Apple Quicktime. Windows still has a lot of codecs that will worry them.
