Australia Projects More International Students To Arrive In 2013

With the year 2011 coming to an end, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship

has reviewed and modified the projections for the influx of international students to arrive in Australia for 2012.

It is expected that after a comprehensive application of the Stage 1 of the Knight Review recommendations for the student visa program would be completed by the middle of 2012. The programs for post-study work visa program would be put in motion by March 2013. The migration numbers collated by the DIAC, especially those long-term overseas students that remain in Australia at least twelve out of sixteen months would be affected by the implemented changes from late next year.

According to the report, the forecasts starting September 2013 would indicate a small but steady increase in the net student numbers as an increased number of students would be arriving while there would be a lesser number of students would be leaving Australia.

The Knight Review recommendations have been highly anticipated, as many Australian universities would further increase the student population as a result of the fast tracking of the student visa application process. According to the DIAC, there are an estimated 6000 more long-term international students that would be studying in Australia during 2011 compared to its unrevised projections. It is expected that the number of long term overseas students to swell to a total of 22,000 by 2015.

One of the first recommendations to be implemented is the requirement that a student visa applicant submits a confirmation of enrollment from their intended education provider.

This move is aimed to make the student visa-processing period more efficient. This implementation has been hailed by the Australian High Commissioner to India, Mr. Peter Varghese. He believes that the new process would provide many benefits and would improve the competitiveness of the Australian education sector.

He added, "This will improve the processing time as students will no longer need to wait for a Pre-Visa Assessment (PVA) letter to be issued by the DIAC before arranging their COE. Australia is a quality education destination and these changes will further strengthen that reputation. We look forward to welcoming high quality students from India. Australia is a great place to study and I encourage all Indian students to consider the many benefits of studying in Australia."

There are many other new programs to be instituted from the Knight Review recommendations that are expected to weed out poseur students as well as increase the quantity and quality of foreign students seeking world-class education from the schools of Australia.
