Food sensitivity can be a very big issue for children with Autism. And it is not specific to one age or ethnicity either. And we also see this with adults too, people are developing intolerances to certain foods. Often times we see intolerances to wheat, dairy and soy but it can be other foods as well. It can be even more challenging finding out which foods are problematic.

Unfortunately there is not just one test out there that will give you all the information you need about food intolerances. A true food allergy test is called an IgE test. It will pinpoint those foods that cause a true allergic reaction but not others that are still problematic but not a true allergy. An IgE allergy typically is quick, produces hives, itching, runny nose or eyes and in extreme cases can by life threatening. A severe peanut allergy where a person cannot breathe is an example. IgG tests look at the IgG chemical that is produced when we eat foods that cause smaller immune reactions. These foods may cause milder reactions like gas, bloating and fatigue hours or days after exposure, making them hard to pinpoint. So an IgG test can help with those intolerances.

You can also test for general immune reactions to things other than just IgE or IgG foods. You can assess chemical reactions to things like phenols, salicylates and artificial flavors and colors rather than some tests which just assess food proteins. So other immunological tests can assess immune response to a more broad range of foods and chemicals in foods as well.

Children with Autism are four times more likely to suffer from food allergies that impact their digestive health than their peers, as reported in recent studies. So you can see just how impactful diet is on bowel health in children with Autism. As you understand the connection more, you can see how digestive inflammation can increase other inflammation elsewhere in the body, including in the brain which we know is very concerning.
