If you're honest with yourself, you've probably thought about being an actor or (dare I suggest?) even a model at some point in your life. Who wouldn't? It seems like a wild way to make a name (and some money). Probably the hard work required for a commercial or TV show, a photo shoot or commercial, isn't for everybody. But those who allow that dream to seep out a bit should start getting serious by looking for honest talent agencies.

Everyone gets excited when they first start looking for an agency. But don't let that cloud your judgment. Many agencies are looking for one thing (at least) -- what's in your pants. That's right: your wallet. There are a lot of promises in the talent world, surprise surprise, but not all are worth anything, and this is important to know. You'll be paying out more than you'll ever make if you aren't smart and careful and critical about who you choose to represent you.

It's just really really important that your agency be fully licensed. Also, if it's been around for a while, a decade or two, that's good, too. Don't sign up for any agency with upfront registration fees. And take a peek at the client list: Pepsi and Ford and other recognizable names are good; "Lady Macbeth's Blood Bank" is one to send up a flag or two.

So you've got an agency you trust, some headshots you can rely on. Now what? What kind of work do you want to do? Glossy magazine? Prime-time commercial? Take a shot at the TV world. This last is perhaps not as intimidating as it seems. Really. In Southern Florida, both USA Network and Fox are producing shows, and those casting directors are always looking for local talent.

The right face isn't always the most exotic. Agencies are always looking for that perfect face amongst us, the everyday folk, the one face that seems familiar to all of us. It can be a baby, a grandparent. It can be rich or poor. All it really has to be is just right.

Now heed this final warning: No agency, even the really slick one, can guarantee work. The caprices of fame are too hard to pin down. But preparation never ever hurts. That's where the agency thrives. From the headshots to the audition, the agency guides your progress until that moment you get under those bright lights and somebody says, in an impossibly loud whisper, Go.
