But it has been a quiet growth, and it was only in the 1800's when rail travel became more popular that any growth was really noticed. The village served as a small junction of the Highland Railway and the outstandingly beautiful, unspoiled countryside of this area began to be more noticed.

This was previously an inaccessible area, but as travel became easier the plain on which Aviemore is situated, overlooking the Monadhliath and Cairngorm Mountains was noticed. Its beauty soon made Aviemore more popular with holiday makers and the growth of the village was a natural outcome of this.

Queen Victoria regularly visited this village and spent time in the spa village of Grantown-on-Spey which is nearby. She enjoyed riding out for picnics and Sir Walter Scott was also a regular visitor. His love of the Highlands was well known and they were the reason for some of his most inspired writing moments.

The Cairngorm Mountains not only inspired poetry and magnificent stories, they also inspired intrepid adventurers. In the 1800's many hardy visitors sought challenges here. Geologists combed the mountain ranges searching for the semi-precious stone of Cairngorm, and this amber colored stone has adorned many pieces of striking, yet practical Scottish jewelry designs.

As a natural part of its development Aviemore was seen as the ideal venue to build a ski resort and this took place in the 1960's. Because of this more hotels were required and it has now become an important winter sports center. Considering its humble, and delayed historical beginnings, Aviemore has fast become a part of the 21st Century.

Visitors are able to take part in a large variety of outdoor activities and it is easily accessible by rail, car and bus. It is situated in the centre of the Cairngorms National Park, and is a popular, thriving tourist destination during all seasons. There is a first class hotel and other accommodation, adequate health and public transport facilities available and excellent leisure amenities. It is also home to the Cairngorm Charmer, a very special race, for very special people, and a great day out.
