Avoid Driving Drunk
Many people in the world like to drink alcoholic beverages
, like wine, beer and whiskey. Why not? It is a very enjoyable experience. Liquor loosens you up and lets you pull your hair down and relax. Alcoholic drinks may have even helped humanity avoid countless diseases by creating an alternative to drinking dirty undrinkable water. There are even health benefits in the moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages.
But there's the rub. In moderation, a lot of things are permissible. But let it go out of control and there's hell to pay. Drinking too much alcohol is no exception. Liquor intoxicates us. It is a relaxant, which frees our tongues and muscles from the tyranny of our ego and super-ego. Under alcoholic control, the id commands our body until gravity asserts its dominance. In other words, we lose control. And when we lose control of our bodies, its not a good idea to do something that requires a lot of control.
Like driving. Experienced drivers have gotten used to driving. We don't actually think much about it anymore, nor do we have to completely concentrate on driving while neglecting everything else, like talking to a companion. However, controlling a car takes a lot of bodily coordination. Our hands, feet and senses work in coordination. The failure of one becomes the failure of all. Failure is pretty costly.
The cost can be counted in many ways. The cheapest way is to count the cost of a trashed car. Cars are not cheap nor are their repairs. We can also count the cost in injuries or in the worst case, lives.
For people under 24, the leading cause of death in the United States are motor vehicle accidents. 40% of those accidents involve liquor. In fact, 40% of the United States' population will be involved in an alcohol related traffic accident. While these are statistics, we shouldn't forget that there are real people behind these. The anguish is very real.
The responsibility for these accidents lies with the driver. While alcohol liberates us from accountability in parties, it doesn't liberate us from accountability when we get behind the wheel. We, alcohol drinkers, have to drink responsibly.
First, drink moderately. One glass of beer never harmed anybody, but the more glasses involved raise the risk of accident. If you want to indulge do it at home. If you can't avoid intoxication, don't drive at all. Take a taxi back home. Or bring someone with you who won't drink at all and who can also drive in your stead. You can even try walking home but nowadays there are actually more accidents in walking drunk. You could get targeted by muggers, or you could suddenly pass out in the middle of the road.
Remember drink moderately and if you can't do that, have someone else drive you back home.
