The Google Ad preview tool is a tool is a tool provided by Google to check your own Google Adwords ads. Google does not advise checking your own ads through the search pages for the following reasons:
- Google doesn't just show Adwords ads based on cost per click alone. Part of the algorithm consists of how popular an ad is, or how high the click through rate is. If you continuously search for your ads and do not click on them, you will lower your overall click through rate and in turn lower the number of times your ad is displayed
- It's possible that if you repeatedly search your own ad and never click on it, you will stop seeing it all together! This is because Google wants to display relevant ads you will click on, and it thinks you are not interested in your own ad! The Google ad preview tool will allow you to bypass the normal search and view your ad without raising your impressions and lowering your click through rate.
How to use the Google Ad Preview Tool
- First, log into your Google Adwords account and click on Ad Preview and Diagnosis
- Type in the keywords you want to check into the Google ad preview tool and click "preview".
- If Google is displaying ads for those search terms, you will see a green "Yes" mini banner
- If you scroll down some more, you will see how Google is displaying your ads
Ads not showing in the Google Ad Preview Tool?
There can be several reasons why the Google ad preview tool doesn't display your ads - here are some things to check:
- If when creating your ads, you specified them only to be show at a specific location, or specific language, make sure to specify the same in the Google ad preview tool
- Check your Ad has been approved. I have had to wait up to a whole week for Google to approve my Ad! If your ad has not been approved, it won't display in the Google ad preview tool
- Pretty much common sense, but make sure your Ad is not paused. Go into the main "Campaigns" tab at the top left, and click the "Ads" tab right below where it says "All Online Campaigns". Your ad should have a green circle next to it if enabled.
- Make sure the specific keyword is not paused. I have from time to time paused specific keywords. Look in the "keywords" tab to the right of the "Ads" tab and make sure your individual Keywords are enabled
- Make sure your ads for specific keywords are displaying. Go into the Keywords Tab as above again, and click the little speech bubble. You will either see a "no" or a "yes". If a no is displayed, Google will tell you why your ad is not displaying based on that keyword
Google Ad Preview Tool Summary
The Google Ad preview tool is generally a less well known tool to internet marketers. However, its usefulness is without question. It is certainly good practice to check how an ad is being displayed to your potential clientele, but perhaps counterproductive if by checking the ad, you are reducing performance of that ad! The Google ad preview tool allows you to check your ad, without compromising ad performance.
