1) The first thing you have to make sure you do in the process of Cage Training A Puppy, is keeping track of the time the puppy spends in the cage, until you let him out. Especially when your puppy is at the early stages it should only be in there for about 5 to 10 minutes every 2 to 3 hours to get him used to it. After that let him out and give him a small treat occasionally and bump up the cage times as your puppy gets older. This will save on a lot of confusion for both you and the puppy.
2) If you are cage training a puppy you need to get the proper cage size for him. Too big and your puppy will likely find a place to potty in the cage. I have used the same one for all 3 dogs. Was just the perfect size for them. It should be big enough for him to stand up, and move around left and right in a complete circle when he is at his adult height and weight. Just enough for the dog to be comfortable.
3) You should never use the cage as punishment especially while cage training a puppy. It may frighten your dog and then he will refuse to enter it. I have only come across that once with my second dog and I never did it again after a friend told me not to do it because you want your pet to make the cage his little temporary home away from home.
