Avoid These Mistakes While Changing Your Career
At a time when several countries in the world are reeling under a severe economic crisis
, making a career shift might sound like a catastrophic move. However, looking for a job in a new field isn't as exasperating as it is made out to be.
As opposed to popular belief, recruiters are not looking solely for people with extensive experience in a particular field. Rather, they are more interested in people with experience that ranges over multiple sectors. So, all the years you devoted to your older job won't go futile since there are a number of transferable skills that might benefit you in the field of your choice.
Having said that, changing your career is not going to be a cakewalk either. You can't simply wake up one day and decide to look for a career you love. That is one of the most common mistakes made by people looking for a career change. They believe that they only need conviction and belief to attain success in a new field. Sadly, that is miles away from the truth. In fact, popular forms of media create an extremely distorted picture of the whole scenario and people easily fall into the trap. Here is a list of the most common career shift mistakes and how to avoid them-
1. Understand the difference between your job and career- Essentially, it all boils down to the reason behind the career shift. There is nothing wrong with wanting to venture into a new field, but, you must have the right reasons. You might not like your job due to a number of factors like a demanding boss or uncooperative colleagues, but, hating the kind of work you do is a different matter altogether. The former problem can be solved by looking for a new job while the latter needs a more radical solution i.e. changing your career.
2. Always have a plan - While making a career change, it helps immensely if you remain practical. Do not be misled by fantastical ideas in such a crucial phase of your life. Before you quit your current job, make a definitive plan. To begin with, assess your options and the skills you possess, study the condition of the field you want to switch to, and finally, take into account your own financial situation.
3. Don't be tempted by the money - There is no denying the fact that money is an important factor, but don't let it be the only factor that guides you towards a new career. In the present day and age, new careers emerge every day but a very few of them have sustainability. They might offer short term benefits, but they will end up stunting your professional growth in the long run. Therefore, do your homework and maintain a cool head before you make any hasty decisions about your career.
