Avoiding Date Rape - 4 Suggestions To Heed
Dating is an amazing time for any young woman
Dating is an amazing time for any young woman. Feeling important enough to be asked out on a date by a young man can make her feel on top of the world. She doesn't want to screw up. Perhaps her family situation isn't great and here is someone offering her love and adventure. But what does she do if he decides he wants to have sex with her and she doesn't want that yet? She says "No" but he persists, saying she'll enjoy it, it will seal their relationship. She still is adamant about not wanting to and the new acquaintance forces her to have sex with him against her wishes.
This is one form of date rape.
Date rape is also referred to as acquaintance rape since it is usually committed by an acquaintance and does not necessarily have to happen on a date.
Most dating scenarios and relationships don't involve date rape, however there are some people out there who have no concern about hurting others and will take advantage of someone weaker than they are.
Alcohol can play a big role in date rape. An Acquaintance who just introduced himself to you in a club or at a party may get drunk and use force to get what he wants from you. You may drink too much yourself and do things you normally wouldn't do. You might end up out in a deserted area with someone you never would have accompanied anywhere with under normal conditions. What you thought was only going to be conversation ends up being rape.
These are 4 things to keep in mind to help stay safe when out with someone you are just getting to know:
1. Don't drink in excess. Never accompany a man you just met to his home or any other private area if you are intoxicated. Stay with people you know if you are drinking.
2. Never accept a drink from someone you don't know and trust in a bar or anywhere. It's best to watch the drink being mixed and never set it down unattended for any length of time, intending to return to it later. This is because drugs are a prevalent aspect accompanying date rape. Drugs such as ketamine, roofies and GHB can be easily added to drinks, causing the person ingesting the drug to black out and forget what happens. These drugs can cause blurred vision and other complications. When these substances are combined with alcohol they can be very dangerous and even deadly.
3. Take a self-defense course. This will not only improve your self-confidence and stamina, but will also teach you important techniques to use to take control away from someone trying to assault you.
4. Carrying non-lethal self-defense weapons where they are allowed within the law will also give you a sense of control in the form of a weapon to use on an attacker. Just be sure you are confident in their proper use. These self-defense weapons such as pepper spray will incapacitate an assailant and give you time to run away and get help.
Rape is never legitimized and it is never the fault of the victim. The rapist is always the one at fault regardless of the situation. Regrettably, until these rapists accept responsibility for their actions and seek help for their problems, we women have to take heed of these safety precautions to prevent becoming a statistic of date rape.
