When it comes to high quality American TV, many Brits might suggest coyly that you'll have to look a long time before you find any but that simply isn't the case. At least not if you're familiar with HBO. HBO is one of the most popular television channels in the United States and its collection of original series is second to none. If you watch any American TV series at home that you find particularly high quality, there's a good chance that the show belongs to HBO. With a reputation for great TV that often pushes the boundaries of America's tough censorship laws and even those of other places, it is definitely a channel to watch for. Willing to take a chance on out-there TV shows and to employ writers who put product quality over general appeal, the channel's shows are instantly recognisable for being incredibly smart, engaging, witty and very well produced.

HBO has given America and the rest of the world a variety of award-winning shows that you've probably watched and probably watched regularly at that. These include some of the most innovative and culturally shocking' shows that changed the way TV and even some parts of society operate. One such show is Sex and the City. After all, who didn't notice a societal shift when female viewers in particular saw the friendship and relationships of the four female leads as a testament to the power of women and the beginning of a new freedom for women previously tied down in a male-dominated area sex?
