Back Conditions That May Be Helped By Adjustable Beds

If you suffer from back pain, you know that bedtime is usually an unwelcome event rather than a welcome one

. Many people's nighttime discomforts stem not from the firmness or softness of their mattresses, but rather from having to sleep in a prone position. In simple terms, if you are more comfortable sleeping in an easy chair than you are in bed, an adjustable bed may be the solution for you. Here is a snapshot look at some of the types of back conditions that can be helped by the use of an adjustable bed rather than a standard flat design, along with other benefits.

Osteoarthritis

Many arthritis sufferers wake up in the morning with stiffness and achiness in their joints. Some sufferers' pain "travels" from one joint to another depending on the weather or by sheer coincidence. Sleeping in an adjustable bed allows osteoarthritis sufferers to put their mattress in whichever position will minimize their pain; it can be raised at the head, or at the feet, or even in the middle: whichever way that will give you the most support for your afflicted joints along with the least possible amount of compression.

Spinal Stenosis (Creeping Paralysis)

An affliction primarily of the aged, stenosis is the next step in the deterioration of back joints after osteoarthritis. Over time, the spinal canal can narrow and the symptoms of this affliction often complain of aching or cramping pain in the legs when they walk which is caused by unnatural nerve compression. Interestingly, studies show that sleeping in a reclining (rather than completely flat) position will help to relieve the nerve compression caused by spinal stenosis. This angle can be achieved by propping pillows, of course, but it is much easier to simply use an adjustable bed for maximum comfort.

Spondylolisthesis

The back pain brought on by this degenerative condition is rendered practically unbearable by sleeping on a flat mattress, no matter how soft the surface is. When the facet joints between each vertebra begin to age, they may weaken to such an extent that the vertebrae are allowed to slip forward onto each other. As a rule, a sufferer feels the most relief when sitting straight up; sleeping in an adjustable bed allows those with degenerative spondylolisthesis to sleep with their back straight up in much the same position as when they are sitting. Propped pillows are unreliable and may slip during the night, but a bed will maintain its position with integrity every time.

The convenience of being able to watch TV in bed easily has always been one of the main selling points for adjustable beds, and it is a great benefit. However, as this article shows, the use of adjustable beds for the relief of specific back pains is perhaps their most important job.
